On page 45 is a review of Bernard Lietaer’s long-awaited new book, The Future of Money. The book contains a wealth of interesting facts and examples, and thought-provoking ideas and proposals, but I have to disagree with Lietaer’s pessimism concerning the possibility of achieving monetary reform, despite its failure to date. Though he is well informed on the faults of the present global system, in seeking to promote ‘complementary’ currencies as a corrective I believe he underestimates the dire effects of the escalating, legally enforceable debts generated by this system, which cannot be extinguished by any of the complementary systems, and are the prime driving-force for ‘economic growth’ and ‘globalisation’..
On page 44 I reproduce an article originally published in 1984, by the late John Hotson, who became a founder member of COMER. I have just come across the article, and think it worth republishing now because it argues clearly and powerfully for the role of usury—in its historical sense: demanding more in return than is lent—in the dire developments in the modern ‘economy’, especially when applied to the money stock . He makes clear the practical and moral reasons for the practice to be condemned by most religions and philosophers of the past, and in fact the practice of ‘debt forgiveness’ was in place for a couple of millennia BC, to stabilise society.
Though the data Hotson uses relate to Canada, the situation is comparable worldwide, and the intervening time has magnified the problems.

The Ten-Point Global Paradigm Revolution
As we enter 2015, the global corporate system deepens and spreads in its eco-genocidal effects. But the dots are not joined in their common cause across domains. Money-value coordinates like gross domestic product (GDP), commodity productivity and stock market indexes are still adopted as the measures of “economic performance” rather than life capital development which is systemically depredated.
1. The One-Way Eco-Genocidal Trends
Pollution cycles and volumes increase to endanger life systems at all levels, but no global system reduction has been made since the Ozone protocol over 25 years ago.
2. The Moral DNA of the Cancer Stage of Capitalism
Bertrand Russell’s warning here is apposite. “Mathematics may be defined as the subject where we never know what we are talking about, nor whether what we say is true.”
3. Contemporary Economics is a Pseudo-Science
We find here, in fact, the underlying form of a fanatic religion. Supra-human laws dictate commands across peoples, and no deadly consequences diminish certitude in its production of the optimal state for all by the perfect design of the system. With the supreme conceit of a just-so story of dyadic market exchange producing the best of possible worlds multiplied to infinity with no possibility of being wrong, we find the inner logic of the global disorder. It rules as a totalitarian creed blind to all but its own growth free of any life value, standard or regulator.
4. Knowledge Wins in the End, but Not Until It is Known
Behind every step of degeneration lie failures of social knowledge:
(1) failure to diagnose the regulating value mechanism at work;
(2) failure to connect across the domains of life despoliation as predictable from the system’s blind money-demand multiplications;
(3) failure to define or demand any public policies against its despoiling and devouring life support systems with the public increasingly financing the out-of-control feeding cycles;
(4) failure to recognise any life-value principle or ground of the real economy itself.
5. Re-Grounding in Real Capital and Goods, True Supply and Demand
Demand is not need or necessity as in any real economy. It is money demand minted by private banks without the legal tender to back over 97 per cent of it: which is ever more unequally held by those serving no productive function, and which nowhere today stands for any life need whatever.

An event at a New York synagogue, in which Jeffrey Epstein‘s lawyer Alan Dershowitz was to defend biblical figures in a mock trial against accusations of “kidnapping and child trafficking,” has, perhaps wisely, been canceled.
He was supposed to be facing off against Chris Christie in the November event. Dershowitz tells Page Six the move “was agreed upon by everybody. It was a question of the subject.” He also said the advertising for the event at Temple Emanu-El Streicker Center — which featured a photo of him next to giant yellow capital letters reading “The charges: kidnapping and child trafficking” — might have been a problem. “The title was so provocative in the wake of Epstein’s suicide,” he told us.

Grand National Holiday, and Congress of the Productive Classes is a classic pamphlet of the British left. It was self-published by William Benbow – a publicist and pamphleteer who worked in a coffee house at 205 Fleet Street, London, after apparently having an early career as an unconventional preacher in Manchester. Benbow was an advocate of armed revolutionary insurrection as a means of accomplishing his “national holiday”, and was eventually arrested on 4th August 1839, to be jailed for sixteen months on charges of sedition. Maximilien Rubel, in his “Autopraxis historique du prolétariat”, sees a brilliant but naive prefiguration of various Marxist themes in Benbow’s pamphlet, largely in his emphasis upon the working class as an active social subject. Benbow also writes of a necessary “unity of thought and action”, but here the emphasis is on the unity of the working class in theory and practice, rather than a unity of theory and practice as such.

England suffered economic hardship in the years immediately following the Napoleonic Wars, and Lord Liverpool’s government faced growing demands for social, political and economic reform. In the textile towns of the industrial north, wages fell sharply as the factory system developed, and traditional handloom weavers were among the worst affected. The Corn Laws of 1815 onward were intended to protect British agricultural landowners from cheap foreign imports, but their effect was to increase grain prices and decrease supplies, causing hardship among the poor. In 1816 (the “Year without a summer”) severe weather resulted in poor harvests, leading to further food shortages during the winter of 1816–1817. Discontent led to riots, first in some country districts and then in towns and cities, notably the London Spa Fields riots of November–December 1816. A Reform Bill for universal suffrage was drafted, with considerable input from the Northern radicals, and presented to Parliament at the end of January by Thomas Cochrane, but it was rejected on procedural grounds by the House of Commons.[1] After the Prince Regent’s coach was attacked on the way back from Parliament on 28 January 1817, the government embarked on the so-called “Gag Acts”, a number of measures to repress the radicals, including the suspension of the Habeas Corpus Act. The rejection of the draft bill, and the increasingly repressive measure, led to a series of events that included the Blanketeers’ march, as the radicals attempted, as Poole puts it: “to appeal in the last resort to the crown over the head of parliament, and to exercise in person the right of petitioning which had been denied them by proxy”.[1]

In January and February 1817, various workers’ and deputies’ meetings in Manchester were addressed by the radical orators Samuel Drummond and John Bagguley. A recurring theme of these meetings was the supposed legal right of individuals to address petitions directly to the Crown. Drummond and Bagguley helped plan a march to London to present such a petition, holding meetings along the way and encouraging others to join the demonstration, and these plans were announced by William Benbow at a public meeting in Manchester on 3 March, at which the hope was expressed that the marchers would be 20,000 strong.[1]
Some Lancashire reformers opposed the march and advised their supporters not to take part. Samuel Bamford, a weaver, writer and radical leader from Middleton, had been part of the delegation to London to discuss and forward the abortive Reform Bill.[1] He thought the march ill-planned and unwise, predicting that they would be “denounced as robbers and rebels and the military would be brought to cut them down or take them prisoners”,[2] and expressed his relief that no Middleton people went as marchers. Bamford would later claim that one of the organisers disappeared with the money raised to feed the Blanketeers, leaving them without a means of support on the march.[3]

They were known at the time as Rotundists or Rotundanists. The Rotundists were identified by one historian as the followers of William Lovett.[1] Lovett belonged to the Radical Reform Association which in the summer of 1830 was holding weekly meetings at the Rotunda.[2] Graham Wallas, however, stated that “Rotundanist” was used for the membership of the National Union of the Working Classes (NUWC);[3] the Rotunda was an organising venue for Henry Hetherington and James Watson in running the NUWC.[4]

Political Register
In 1802 William Cobbett started his newspaper, the Political Register. At first Cobbett’s newspaper supported the Tories but he gradually became more radical. By 1806 Cobbett used the newspaper to campaign for parliamentary reform.
William Cobbett was not afraid to criticise the government in the Political Register and in 1809 he attacked the use of German troops to put down a mutiny in Ely. Cobbett was tried and convicted for sedition and sentenced to two years’ imprisonment in Newgate Prison. When Cobbett was released he continued his campaign against newspaper taxes and government attempts to prevent free speech.
By 1815 the tax on newspapers had reached 4d. a copy. As few people could afford to pay 6d. or 7d. for a newspaper, the tax restricted the circulation of most of these journals to people with fairly high incomes. Cobbett was only able to sell just over a thousand copies a week. The following year William Cobbett began publishing it as a pamphlet. Cobbett now sold the Political Register for only 2d. and it soon had a circulation of 40,000.
Cobbett’s journal was the main newspaper read by the working class. This made William Cobbett a dangerous man and in 1817 he heard that the government planned to have him arrested for sedition. Unwilling to spend another period in prison, Cobbett fled to the United States. For two years Cobbett lived on a farm in Long Island but with the help of William Benbow, a friend in London, continued to publish the Political Register.
William Cobbett arrived back in England soon after the Peterloo Massacre. Cobbett joined with other Radicals in his attacks on the government and three times during the next couple of years was charged with libel.
In 1821 William Cobbett started a tour of Britain on horseback. Each evening he recorded his observations on what he had seen and heard that day. This work was published as a series of articles in the Political Register and as a book, Rural Rides, in 1830.
Cobbett continued to publish controversial material in the Political Register and in July, 1831, was charged with seditious libel after writing an article in support of the Captain Swing Riots. Cobbett conducted his own defence and he was so successful that the jury failed to convict him.
Even after his election to the House of Commons in 1832 William Cobbett continued to publish the Political Register. Cobbett wrote his last article for the newspaper on 13th June 1835. Cobbett died five days later on 18th June 1835.

The Cobbett’s Weekly Political Register (a.k.a. Political Register) was a weekly London-based[1] newspaper founded by William Cobbett in 1802. It ceased publication in 1836, the year after Cobbett’s death.[2]
History[edit]
Originally propounding Tory views, and costing a shilling, Cobbett changed his editorial line to embrace radicalism, such as advocating widening the suffrage. It had a large circulation for that time of 6,000 copies.[3]
The government was alarmed by its radicalism and tried to prevent mass circulation by adding stamp duty on all newspapers putting them out of reach of all but the wealthiest. From November 1816 Cobbett also published the Register in a cheap 2d. pamphlet, which kept political comment but evaded stamp duty by excising news.[4] The price of the paper gave it the nickname “Tuppenny Trash”,[5] nevertheless it soon gained a circulation of 40,000.[6]
Cobbett began publishing Parliamentary Debates as a supplement to his Political Register in 1802. At the time it was illegal to report the proceeding of Parliament, only its ultimate decisions. He eventually extended his reportage back in time with the Parliamentary History. Cobbett’s reports were printed by Thomas Curson Hansard from 1809. In 1812, with his business suffering, Cobbett sold the Debates section to Hansard.[3]

William Benbow (1787 – 1864) was a nonconformist preacher, pamphleteer, pornographer and publisher, and a prominent figure of the Reform Movement in Manchester and London.[1] He worked with William Cobbett on the radical newspaper Political Register, and spent time in prison as a consequence of his writing, publishing and campaigning activities. He has been credited with formulating and popularising the idea of a general strike for the purpose of political reform.[2]

Andrew McConnell Stott explores how a fractious relationship between Polidori and his poet employer lies behind the tale, with Byron himself providing a model for the blood-sucking aristocratic figure of the legend we are familiar with today.

Readers will know of the evening in 1816, on the shores of Lake Geneva, when a challenge from her husband-to-be and his friend Lord Byron led Mary Shelley (then, Mary Godwin) to create Frankenstein. What’s less well known is that this same challenge led another guest to create that other great figure of 19th-century gothic fiction – the vampire.
The first fully realized vampire story in English, John William Polidori’s “The Vampyre”… establishes the vampire as we know it via a reimagining of the feral mud-caked creatures of southeastern European legend as the elegant and magnetic denizens of cosmopolitan assemblies and polite drawing rooms.
“The Vampyre” is a product of 1816, the “year without summer,” in which Lord Byron left England in the wake of a disintegrating marriage and rumours of incest, sodomy and madness, to travel to the banks of Lake Geneva and there loiter with Percy and Mary Shelley (then still Mary Godwin). Polidori served as Byron’s traveling physician, and played an active role in the summer’s tensions and rivalries, as well as participating in the famous night of ghost stories that produced Mary Shelley’s “hideous progeny,” Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus.
Like Frankenstein, “The Vampyre” draws extensively on the mood at Byron’s Villa Diodati. But whereas Mary Shelley incorporated the orchestral thunderstorms that illuminated the lake and the sublime mountain scenery that served as a backdrop to Victor Frankenstein’s struggles, Polidori’s text is woven from the invisible dynamics of the Byron-Shelley circle, and especially the humiliations he suffered at Byron’s hand…

Stevenson believed in Conservatism for most of his life. His cousin and biographer Sir Graham Balfour said that “he probably throughout life would, if compelled to vote, have always supported the Conservative candidate.”[46] In 1866, Stevenson voted for Benjamin Disraeli, future Conservative Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, over Thomas Carlyle for the Lord Rectorship of the University of Edinburgh.[47] During his college years, he briefly identified himself as a “red-hot socialist”. He wrote at age 26: “I look back to the time when I was a Socialist with something like regret…. Now I know that in thus turning Conservative with years, I am going through the normal cycle of change and travelling in the common orbit of men’s opinions.”[48]

There are still unconfirmed rumours that another senior Labour politician is among the suspects. The intelligence officer said that a “rolling” Cabinet committee had been set up to work out how to deal with the potentially ruinous fall-out for both Tony Blair and the government if arrests occur.

McLachlan, who was one of the main officers on Operation Ore before his retirement last year, said: “Sufficient warnings have been given that if people haven’t got rid of their computers then they are either stupid, don’t believe they’ll be arrested or are so obsessive about their collections that they can’t destroy it. Detective Chief Inspector Bob McLachlan, former head of Scotland Yard’s paedophile unit, told the Sunday Herald that the lack of urgency in making arrests will lead to suspects destroying evidence of downloading child pornography before they are arrested.
The Sunday Herald has also had confirmed by a very senior source in British intelligence that at least one high-profile former Labour Cabinet minister is among Operation Ore suspects. The Sunday Herald has been given the politician’s name but, for legal reasons, can not identify the person.

I was invited by Claire Fox to take part in this event. Here are my introductory remarks. I was alongside, among others, Melanie Phillips, Brendan O’Neill, and Richard Angel (Progress).
You might wonder why I, a philosopher, have been invited on to this panel. I guess the reason is I’m interested in and have published on the ways in which bullshit beliefs – myths and prejudices – can get a grip on public thinking.
I wrote a book called Believing Bullshit – How Not To Fall Into an Intellectual Black Hole which flags up some of the key signs that we are dealing with a with a myth or prejudice rather than rational belief.
So how, in particular do prejudices regarding women, black people, Jews and so on get started?
Well, once it’s been suggested that a certain group have some ‘problem’ – that women have a bad driving problem, say, or Jews have a greed problem, it’s usually not hard to find examples.
