This tells you at once that the centre of Paxman’s English picture is the ruling elite, past and present. These are the English people he calls “the Breed”, product of shire and public school, creators of the empire, persons who are “polite”, “unexcitable”, “deeply conservative”, “reserved”, “decent”, “with a strong streak of natural gloominess”, notable for vanity, tolerance, narrow-mindedness, hypocrisy, a hatred of foreigners, and a belief in personal liberty and fair play.

The list of attributes is both endless and contradictory, but no matter, because it is Paxman’s endeavour to point out that much of this kind of Englishness no longer describes the country in which the English actually live. Paxman’s rallying call is for the English, exiles in their own country, to jettison the mythical attributes of this dead Breed and celebrate the urban, raffish, individualistic pragmatism which constitutes England today.

Paxman is not strong on those other “Englands” – non-conformist, working-class, domestic, to name only a few – which some may see as creators of an England past and present that is more important or more interesting than that of the Breed; still, he presents his thesis with convincing vigour. He tos and fros between sources as various as “Brief Encounter” and “Mrs Miniver” – through byways which include a jewel of an encounter between Bernie Grant MP and the Duke of Edinburgh, a brilliant analysis of the Church of England and Dostoevsky’s impressions of 19th-century London.

The Hampton awareness group, Genocide80Twenty welcomed BBC Newsnight journalist Gabriel Gatehouse to the School on Monday. Mr Gatehouse spoke very movingly about the reports that he recently filed from Bangladesh where he witnesses at first hand the plight of the Rohingya people fleeing from the terrible atrocities in Myanmar.

In particular, Gabriel outlined the massacre in the village of Tula Toli. He warned the audience against creating the ‘other’ and to not believe those who demonise minority groups. If ordinary humans start believing hate speech, Gabriel contended, then anyone is capable of the terrible acts that he saw being committed in Myanmar just a couple of weeks ago.

Afterwards, Mr Gatehouse very kindly asked the group about their awareness raising work and then spent time answering questions for Hampton Radio’s Fabio Rossi.
