All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players: They have their exits and their entrances; And each man in his time plays many parts.
- – Shakespeare, As You Like It, II, vii’.
I thought I would drop by and see what you were making of the present Circus.
Risible, Abject, exaggerated, mendacious, absurd, idiotic; all provide suitably kafkaesque verbiage for the pronoun police to chew like cud as it transforms to the ever-mounting soritean heap of BS the other end.
“” THE JUDGEMENT OF OVERPOPULATION IS MORE OR LESS ARBITRARY, REMINISCENT OF THE SORITEAN ‘HEAP’.””
The novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) has become a go-to reason for world leaders to shut down national economies and to institute de facto martial law. We are told not to panic but are simultanously given a list of reasons to Panic. We are told to follow orders of the now militarised health authorities without doubt or hesitation: ‘This is for your own safety’. Perhaps it is. We must nonetheless ask whether coercive suspension of basic freedoms is a constructive response to any crisis. Would we know we are in the midst of an extraordinarily lethal pandemic if this virus were not given a name, if we were not bombarded with daily updates of infection and fatality statistics, or if the celebrities did not insist on advertising their (alleged) infection status?
The Toxteth Day of the Dead will be on the 23rd of November each year.
On each Toxteth Day of the Dead, bricks MuMufied in the previous twelve months will be laid by The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu or their representatives on the growing People’s Pyramid. That is until the last of the 34,592 bricks has been laid and the People’s Pyramid is built.
The Toxteth Book of the Dead
The Toxteth Book of the Dead exists to log all the names, dates of birth, contact details and signatures of those that have signed up for having a small portion of their cremated remains MuMufied. And for the MuMufied brick to be used as part of the building of The People’s Pyramid. There will also be space for their date of death.

The Enlightenment project postulated rationality as the highest normative principle, and humanity (not limited to Homo-sapiens but inclusive of all beings possessing rational agency) as the ultimate value. Today humanity is no longer the ultimate value for the Humanities (rebranded with the pre-Enlightenment term Liberal Arts) and this practical devaluation implicitly negates humanist ethics. The Liberal Arts still capitalise on the humanistic sentiment, but it is clear that humanism is no longer regarded as a priori normative but subordinate to other, more obscure value-commitments.
Coronavirus disease 2019: The harms of exaggerated information and non-evidence-based measures The evolving coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic1 is certainly cause for concern. Proper communication and optimal decision-making are an ongoing challenge, as data evolve. The challenge is compounded, however, by exaggerated information. This can lead to inappropriate actions. It is important to differentiate promptly the true epidemic from an epidemic of false claims and potentially harmful actions.
12 | LEARNING FROM COVID-19 The Box 1 summarizes the problems with inaccurate and exaggerated information in the case of COVID-19. Even if COVID-19 is not a 1918-recap in infection-related deaths, some coronavirus may match the 1918 pandemic in future seasons. Thus, we should learn and be better prepared. Questions about transmission, duration of immunity, effectiveness of different containment and mitigation methods, the role of children in viral spread, and assessment of the effectiveness of vaccines and drugs are essential to settle timely. This research agenda requires carefully collected, unbiased data to avoid unfounded inferences. Larger-scale diagnostic testing should help get more unbiased estimates of cases, basic reproduction number and infection fatality rate. The research agenda also deserves proper experimental studies. Besides candidate vaccines and drugs, randomized trials should evaluate also the real-world effectiveness of simple measures (eg face masks in different settings), least disruptive social distancing measures and healthcare management policies for documented cases. If COVID-19 is indeed the pandemic of the century, we need the most accurate evidence to handle it. Open data sharing of scientific information is a minimum requirement. This should include data on the number and demographics of tested individuals per day in each country and the demographics and background diseases of patients requiring hospital care and intensive care and those who die. Proper prevalence studies and trials are also indispensable. If COVID-19 is not as grave as it is depicted, high evidence standards are equally relevant. Exaggeration and overreaction may seriously damage the reputation of science, public health, media and policymakers. It may foster disbelief that will jeopardize the prospects of an appropriately strong response if and when a more major pandemic strikes in the future.
