In her ground-breaking reporting from Iraq, Naomi Klein exposed how the trauma of invasion was being exploited to remake the country in the interest of foreign corporations. She called it “disaster capitalism.” Covering Sri Lanka in the wake of the tsunami, and New Orleans post-Katrina, she witnessed something remarkably similar. People still reeling from catastrophe were being hit again, this time with economic “shock treatment” losing their land and homes to rapid-fire corporate makeovers. The Shock Doctrine retells the story of the most dominant ideology of our time, Milton Friedman’s free market economic revolution. In contrast to the popular myth of this movement’s peaceful global victory, Klein shows how it has exploited moments of shock and extreme violence in order to implement its economic policies in so many parts of the world from Latin America and Eastern Europe to South Africa, Russia, and Iraq. At the core of disaster capitalism is the use of cataclysmic events to advance radical privatization combined with the privatization of the disaster response itself. By capitalizing on crises, created by nature or war, Klein argues that the disaster capitalism complex now exists as a booming new economy, and is the violent culmination of a radical economic project that has been incubating for fifty years.

Ultimately SHADOW WORLD reveals the real costs of war, the way the arms trade drives it, how weapons of war are turned against citizens of liberal democracies and how the trade decreases rather than enhances security for us all. In shedding light on how our realities are being constructed, the film offers a way for audiences to see through this horror, in the hopes of creating a better future.

He is not the only one to do this. For a more mainstream treatment, see Diane Ravitch “Left Back, a Century of Failed School Reform.” Ravitch is at the Brookings Institution, in the heart of Washington, and is therefore taken as authoritative. It is refreshing to see Gatto, coming in from left field, rather directly out of the classroom, make pretty much the same observations about the great figures in the history of American education: Thorndike, Rugg, Cubberley, Conant,… too many to name. He also describes the education schools, notably Colombia, University of Chicago, Stanford and Harvard, which have dominated the discussion ever since they managed to make something which had always been considered an art, teaching technique, into an academic subject which would support endless PhD’s and pompous academic publications.
Ravitch’s latest book “The Death And Life Of The Great American School System” criticizes the effect of the recent Gazillionaires’ (Bill Gates et al) philanthropy on modern education. Gatto analyzes the agendas of the first generation of great educational philanthropists: Carnegie, Ford, and Rockefeller among others. He says that their motives were to create good workers and consumers, not to advance intellectual inquiry. In fact, he concludes throughout, they set up systems to stifle independent intellectual endeavor and breed conformity. Moreover, they did it in a way that reinforced the Anglican social class structure which dated back to our country’s founding.
Gatto describes his own intellectual journey, from a belief that the schools were simply misguided, and could be reformed, to the conviction that they are so thoroughly controlled by such a broad web of interests, among them the education schools, the teachers unions, various levels of government, and the teachers and administrators themselves, that it will never be unraveled. Gatto’s own experience is illustrative. He was named teacher of the year in both New York City and New York State, but he was also run out of his teaching position by administrators who found him too original and difficult to deal with. The schools are a bureaucracy, and they serve the bureaucrats first. Educating your kid is incidental. Gatto was continually in trouble for trying to do that. Rather than beat your head against such an obdurate system, the only thing for a wise parent to do is to take charge of your children’s education. Take them out!
I heartily agree. I sent three children through elite Episcopal schools, and served on the boards of both of them. After retiring I taught in several private schools. Gatto is absolutely right when he says that even the best of schools, there is no more than an hour of pure education delivered in any given day. Most of the time is spent moving the kids around, controlling them, and giving them busy work. Gatto says they become bored and stultified because they are not intellectually challenged. In fact, when they tried to do something independent, it puts them out of step with the rest of the class and the whole power structure comes down on top of them. Rather than being a place of learning, which is something a student might do on his own, the school becomes a place of teaching, in which the powers that be, ultimately the teacher, decides what, when and how much learning is going to go on.
Whether or not you wind up believing with Gatto that un-schooling is the way to go, you owe it to yourself to read this wonderful history of education and analysis of the things that are wrong with it. What you do next is up to you, but you will have taken the vital first step which is taking control of your child’s education.
NB: You can download this book for free, but I am sure it is one you will want to have on your bookshelf. Also, it is a lot easier to read a bound edition than a PDF.

George Osborne says that we all must pay more taxes and receive fewer public services. According to the chancellor there is no Plan B for the UK economy – but he’s utterly wrong.
We could make one simple spending cut that could make all others unnecessary.
Here’s Plan B: cut the benefits to bankers!
Banks are the most heavily subsidised businesses in the world, specially protected by governments. While the money runs out for the rest of us, the largest private banks still thrive. This is because they get the biggest subsidy of them all – the licence to print money.
Hard to believe? Martin Wolf, the Chief Economics Editor at the Financial Times, said it recently: “The essence of the contemporary monetary system is the creation of money, out of nothing, by private banks’ often foolish lending…”
You heard that right. Private banks create money out of nothing! Then they loan it to us and ask for interest on top!
If you’ve ever wondered why the bank buildings around the world soar higher than any palace or spire ever did, you now have the answer.
But the banks don’t simply print money using secret printing presses in their basements. They don’t have to. Like so many other things these days, printing money has now gone digital. With the popular use of debit cards, electronic fund transfers, and internet banking, only 3% of the money in the UK is now made of paper and metal coins. The other 97% is entirely in computers. Electronic money is convenient for everyone, but it’s especially convenient for the private banks, since they own, run, and control the entire digital money system.
And what do they do with this special privilege? Do they channel new money, the blood supply of the nation, towards the things we need like hospitals, schools, universities and public transport?
Not if it doesn’t make a profit for them. Instead they use their licence to print money to gamble on the financial markets and pushing house prices out of reach of ordinary people by pumping hundreds of billions of pounds into risky mortgages. This is exactly how the banks caused the financial crisis, and now the rest of us are being asked to pay for it.
George Osborne is essentially asking us to protect the gambling habits of a gang of overpaid paper pushers by raising taxes and slashing public services, both of which hurt the poor more than the rich. If we can’t afford to run hospitals and build schools, can we really afford to subsidise the financial industry? Should we have to live with less so the bankers can have more?
This is ludicrous, and it’s time to put a stop to it. The private banks can’t be trusted to hold the reins to our entire economy.
Instead of cutting vital public services so that bankers can continue to enjoy the high life, we need to take away the bank’s power to create money out of nothing. This will stop them from causing yet another financial meltdown and allow us to afford the crucial services that we as a society need.
So join us in sending this message straight to Mr. Osborne: there is a Plan B for the UK economy. Cut the benefits to bankers out, not the things we care about!

On the 15th of November 1976 American
journalist Mark Hosenball was served a deportaion notice, a few days later Phillip Agee Ex CIA operative and radical journalist was served a similar order. Both had been connected with a series of articles about the British and American Intelligence Services featured in Time Out Magazine. One of these entitled the Eavesdroppers co-authored by Duncan Campbell infuriated the powers that be and may indeed have been the basis of these deportation notices, as they couldn’t hit Campbell directly. Though of course this was never admitted. This brief documentary short outlines some of the facts and circumstances of this remarkable piece of recent history that ocurred Thirty years ago and saw the Intelligence service further embroiled in the notorious ABC case.

George Osborne says that we all must pay more taxes and receive fewer public services. According to the chancellor there is no Plan B for the UK economy – but he’s utterly wrong.
We could make one simple spending cut that could make all others unnecessary.
Here’s Plan B: cut the benefits to bankers!
Banks are the most heavily subsidised businesses in the world, specially protected by governments. While the money runs out for the rest of us, the largest private banks still thrive. This is because they get the biggest subsidy of them all – the licence to print money.
Hard to believe? Martin Wolf, the Chief Economics Editor at the Financial Times, said it recently: “The essence of the contemporary monetary system is the creation of money, out of nothing, by private banks’ often foolish lending…”
You heard that right. Private banks create money out of nothing! Then they loan it to us and ask for interest on top!
If you’ve ever wondered why the bank buildings around the world soar higher than any palace or spire ever did, you now have the answer.
But the banks don’t simply print money using secret printing presses in their basements. They don’t have to. Like so many other things these days, printing money has now gone digital. With the popular use of debit cards, electronic fund transfers, and internet banking, only 3% of the money in the UK is now made of paper and metal coins. The other 97% is entirely in computers. Electronic money is convenient for everyone, but it’s especially convenient for the private banks, since they own, run, and control the entire digital money system.
And what do they do with this special privilege? Do they channel new money, the blood supply of the nation, towards the things we need like hospitals, schools, universities and public transport?
Not if it doesn’t make a profit for them. Instead they use their licence to print money to gamble on the financial markets and pushing house prices out of reach of ordinary people by pumping hundreds of billions of pounds into risky mortgages. This is exactly how the banks caused the financial crisis, and now the rest of us are being asked to pay for it.
George Osborne is essentially asking us to protect the gambling habits of a gang of overpaid paper pushers by raising taxes and slashing public services, both of which hurt the poor more than the rich. If we can’t afford to run hospitals and build schools, can we really afford to subsidise the financial industry? Should we have to live with less so the bankers can have more?
This is ludicrous, and it’s time to put a stop to it. The private banks can’t be trusted to hold the reins to our entire economy.
Instead of cutting vital public services so that bankers can continue to enjoy the high life, we need to take away the bank’s power to create money out of nothing. This will stop them from causing yet another financial meltdown and allow us to afford the crucial services that we as a society need.
So join us in sending this message straight to Mr. Osborne: there is a Plan B for the UK economy. Cut the benefits to bankers out, not the things we care about!

The Lost World of the Seventies, part of BBC Two’s current season on the decade, was undeniably focused on the Seventies, but there was little about it that seemed to have been lost.
Michael Cockerell, the veteran BBC documentary-maker who has profiled leaders from Edward Heath to Tony Blair, dug out old film from programmes he’d made 40 years earlier, and added some new interviews, to profile four characters from that era: businessman Sir James Goldsmith, police chief Sir Robert Mark, anti-pornography campaigner Lord Longford and General Walter Walker – a brilliantly “old school” character who recruited a private army to combat an anticipated Marxist coup.
“The Communist Trojan Horse is in our midst with its fellow travellers wriggling their maggoty way inside its belly,” he wrote splendidly in a letter to this newspaper, prompting thousands to support him, including Lord Mountbatten, no less.
The programme had some wonderful old footage to enjoy but little explanation as to why these men’s stories were being retold at this point.
“All four of them lived their lives in primary colours, unlike today’s public figures, who are pastel shaded,” was Cockerill’s rather strained conclusion.

With the CRU emails having been examined, it seems that some people—mainly techies—are really starting to dig into the data files. These files are, as far as we can tell, temperature data, modelling results and other such useful files, i.e. these are the files produced and worked on by the CRU teams, as well as considerable amounts of information on—and code from—the actual computer modelling programmes themselves.
In other words, these are the guts of CRU’s actual computer models—the data, the code and the applications.
And they are, by all accounts, a total bloody mess.

In hindsight, what Hyperland describes and predicts is an approximation of today’s World Wide Web.[3]

ool It: The Skeptical Environmentalist’s Guide to Global Warming is a book by the Danish statistician and political scientist Bjørn Lomborg. The book is a sequel to The Skeptical Environmentalist (first published in Danish in 1998), which in English translation brought the author to world attention. Lomborg argues that many of the elaborate and expensive actions being considered to stop global warming will cost hundreds of billions of dollars without the same return on investment, often are based on emotional rather than strictly scientific assumptions, and may have very little impact on the world’s temperature for centuries. Lomborg concludes that a limited carbon tax is needed in the First World as well as subsidies from the First World to the Third World to help fight ongoing humanitarian crises.

AbstractThe explanation of the rise and fall of the world system’s leading powers in terms of uneven economic development tends to overlook the role of the creation and management of public credit and national debts. Prior to 1815, the Netherlands and Great Britain owed a significant proportion of their respective victories over the larger and wealthier states of Spain and France to the development of competitive financial capabilities. Winning, however, leads to higher absolute debt burdens which, prior to 1945, encouraged postwar reductions in governmental expenditures. In this fashion, world leaders have contributed to the erosion of their preponderant capability positions before the emergence of international rivals. These ideas are elaborated within the context of George Modelski’s long cycle of world leadership theory and through a brief review of war-related financial problems between 1500 and 1815 and the consequent development of national debts. The longitudinal analysis of British and American public debt data provides collaborating empirical support.

Background
Galbraith fully acknowledged the successes of the market system in economics but associated it with instability, inefficiency and social inequity. He advocated government policies and interventions to remedy these perceived faults.[1] In his book Economics and the Public Purpose (1973) he proposed the extension of the planning system used in the industrial core of the economy to the wider market economy. He argued for a new socialism, with more steeply progressive taxes, public housing, medical care and transportation, public support of the arts and the conversion of some corporations and military contractors into public corporations.[2]
He was the most read social scientist of his era. Galbraith’s association with the U.S. Democratic Party and his criticism of fellow economists, who promoted individualistic free-market economics that he perceived as a false social reality, occasioned strong responses.[3] He was of the opinion that “Wealth is the relentless enemy of understanding”.[4]
In the midst of the Watergate scandal in the summer of 1973 Galbraith was called by Adrian Malone of the BBC and asked if he would be interested in doing a television series on the history of economic or social ideas. Galbraith had been thinking of retirement but quickly accepted Malone’s proposal. At an early point they settled on the title “Age of Uncertainty” to reflect the sharp contrast between the great certainty in 19th century economic thought with the much less assured views in modern times.[5]
As discussions about the series continued a further theme was developed: that what people believe about the workings of markets and their relationships to the state shapes history through the laws that are enacted or discarded.[5] It was therefore decided that the treatment of these themes would loosely fall into two parts, ideas followed by their consequences.[6]

Dr. Graham S. Downing is a consultant in Neuro-musculoskeletal & Functional Medicine. He graduated from King’s College London University where he trained in the clinical sciences and molecular biology and attended the Randall Institute as a research student whilst still under the Directorship of Dr Wilkins, Nobel prize winner for his co-discovery of DNA; and European Institute of Health and Medical Sciences, Surrey University where he received an MSc with a specialist area of research in psychoneuroimmunology in the clinical practice.
Dr. Downing was invited to read for a Ph.D at Oxford’s leading research institute, Sir William Dunn School of Pathology but decided on a clinical career instead. He is one of only two doctors in Europe that have received training at consultant level in diagnosis and treatment of internal medical disorders at the Texas Chiropractic College, USA; and advanced Wilderness medicine.
His specialist fields are neuro-musculoskeletal & functional Medicine (with a focus on fertility, endocrinology, infection and gastro-intestinal problems). He has produced science and clinical reports since February 1993 and medico-legal reports since April 2010 as an expert witness.
He is currently President and Director of Clinical Education for a European organisation that sets standards of clinical proficiency and trains healthcare providers, including medical doctors, chiropractors, osteopaths, physiotherapists, herbalists, homoeopaths, nutritionist, functional medicine doctors and other health disciplines to consultant level.

The film examines the taboo that shields the American government’s 9/11 narrative from scholarly examination, and features interviews with several academics to examine scholars’ critical perspectives on the events of September 11, 2001. The film contains archival footage from the 21st-century recession paired with “comedic send-ups” from Brand, conducted in the financial districts of London and New York.[1] In one scene in the film, Brand attempts to confront Lord Rothermere, the billionaire owner of the Daily Mail, about his “non-dom” tax status, through which he avoids paying taxes in the United Kingdom by claiming residence elsewhere. When Brand rings the bell at Rothermere’s London mansion and asks through the intercom to speak to him, he is told by an unseen person that Rothermere does indeed live there.[2]
Winterbottom stated that the film will explore why “nothing has changed” since the economic crisis in 2008.
“It’s about inequality and why the 1 percent (of the world’s wealthy) seem to have so much and the rest of us not quite so much,” Winterbottom told the BBC in October 2014. “Everyone knows about equality and what’s going on in the world, so the idea is to point out the ludicrous extremes of our society.”[3]
The documentary began shooting in October. Winterbottom and Brand had previously discussed—but ultimately abandoned—the idea of producing a film version of Brand’s first memoir, My Booky Wook.

Synopsis:
When a news anchorman threatens to kill himself on air the corporate bodies find every way they can to exploit his rantings for ratings.
It’s amazing to think that in the course of nearly 40 years, despite all the advances we have made in the world, not a lot really changes. And one watch of Network, Sidney Lumet’s 1976 satirical drama about corporate greed in the face of human tragedy, is enough to convince you that the goalposts may move and people may come and go but the almighty dollar is still king.
You only have to watch a Saturday evening of prime time television here in the UK to see that the situations and people depicted in Network aren’t that far-fetched, with
The Last Enemy is a five-part BBC television drama starring Benedict Cumberbatch and featuring Robert Carlyle and Max Beesley. It first aired on 17 February 2008.
Plot
Set in a recognisable, near-future London beset by terrorism and illegal immigration, The Last Enemy features the introduction of “TIA” (Total Information Awareness), a centralised database that can be used to track and monitor anybody, effectively by putting all available government and corporate – i.e. credit card and bank activity, phone use, internet use, purchases, rentals, etc. – information in one place.
The story deals with a political cover-up centred on a sanctioned but secret medical experiment run amok with key members of the government trying desperately to hide all evidence of their experimental batch of vaccine that seems to be causing a deadly virus. The complex story unspools to reveal the moral, social and privacy concerns of this hypothetical TIA system in a post-7/7 world, including such control mechanisms familiar to both real life and science fiction as retinal scans, fingerprint identification and ubiquitous camera and cellphone surveillance footage.
The story is told through the eyes of a mathematical genius, Stephen Ezard, who is portrayed as a recluse showing some signs of obsessive-compulsive disorder. But the shy genius overcomes his own inhibitions to burrow into a highly compromised British government using his brilliance and their TIA system only to find himself ultimately trapped by the people he most trusts, and to learn he is a pawn in manipulative Security State machinations which take the people he most loves from him and compromise him forever.

Cut-up technique is an extension of collage to words themselves, Tristan Tzara describes this in the Dada Manifesto:[49]
TO MAKE A DADAIST POEM
Take a newspaper.
Take some scissors.
Choose from this paper an article of the length you want to make your poem.
Cut out the article.
Next carefully cut out each of the words that makes up this article and put them all in a bag.
Shake gently.
Next take out each cutting one after the other.
Copy conscientiously in the order in which they left the bag.
The poem will resemble you.
And there you are – an infinitely original author of charming sensibility, even though unappreciated by the vulgar herd.
