Towards the end of 2018, I started actively seeking opportunities to go back into business. After having a bad GFC in 2008-2012 essentially I would be starting from scratch and initially decided to look at setting up a fully automated motel chain based around the Internet of Things and EV charging, building motel rooms across the Scandics on a budget hub format was something I had seen succeeding in the budget city visit market and with some adaptation, it seemed like a good format to explore
It was after returning from my January 2020 London business trip that the Covid19 shock hit. Living in Sweden and traveling regularly between Sweden and the UK as Lockdowns in the UK permitted was an interesting window into How differently the response to a “Flu type
potential pandemic” was treated by three different governments and actually 5 different governments as I flew via Charles de Gaulle on one occasion as my PCR test for some reason allowed me to enter the UK from France but not directly from Denmark.
Towards the end of 2021, it seemed to me that people had had their fill of being arbitrarily placed under house arrest and subjected to the excesses of “Little Hitler, Jobsworths” who always seem to thrive in bureaucratic environments, I planned a trip to the Uk at the beginning of 2022 and looked forward to a series of in-person meetings brimming with optimism and enthusiasm as January drew on and my still required quarantine period drew to an end my meetings were canceled through a combination of Bad weather, industrial action and then the start of the Ukraine war, one huge uncertainty the Covid bureaucracy was replaced by another which in turn lead to a narrative of Cost of living Crisis.
Which of course was also in large part due to an incompetent and corrupt response to the Covid 19 Flu Type “Potential Pandemic”.
At this point in this episode of thinking out loud in public the overwhelming temptation is to cut to the chase, but what is the chase what is the point? I can only say what the point is from my point of view. I am an entrepreneur and businessman, I wish to make my contribution to the Uk economy and make a level of profit for my shareholders and myself as well as provide a valued service to my customers. It has been very difficult to do that for the past 3 years, and I see no sign that it will become any easier over the next year or so. At the age of 58 and having been around the block a few times I do have something to compare the current outlook to, I have been in business across 5 decades the 80’s 90s, naughties,twenteens, and now Twenty ’20s.
Global Finance Capital and Transnational corporate monopolies have become too big, these behemoths are not wealth creators and are certainly not friendly to local democracies.
Edmund Burke said something about such times as these.
